Feb 13, 2024

We are so close: HB 134/aaa, the Tribal Education Trust Fund, received unanimous approval in the Senate Finance Committee and is awaiting its Senate Floor hearing for final passage.

Time is running out. The legislative session ends on Thursday at noon. Please contact your Senator now and ask them to vote yes on the Tribal Education Trust Fund. Find your Senator and their contact details here. You may also consider contacting the Senate majority floor leader, Sen. Wirth, and request that HB 134/aaa be scheduled as soon as possible for its floor debate.

HB 134/aaa would establish a new Tribal Education Trust Fund to strengthen tribal education capacity and sovereignty. Initially funded with $50 million,it would secure a stable and consistent funding stream for Tribes to support Native students and help fulfill their right to a culturally relevant, high-quality education.

The bill was revised several times to incorporate tribal feedback. The sponsor, Rep. Lente, removed the proposed task force, and instead accepted the suggestion of a process of consultation and collaboration with New Mexico Tribes. This process must result in a unanimous consensus about how funding should be shared among Tribes. Indigenous peacemakers can be appointed to help resolve any disputes.

New Mexico’s Nations, Tribes and Pueblos now stand united in support of the Tribal Education Trust Fund.
